good but not good

January 4th, 2009

It looks like the Patriots will be placing the franchise tag onto Matt Cassel, to prevent him from being an unrestricted free agent in March and possibly leaving the team. While I am happy they are doing this so we know he will be able to start next season and feel comfortable with him playing, after a stellar season this year, I am also sadden. Because this means there is a real big chance Brady will not be ready to play in 2009 and may ultimately be cut. Right now he is having a lot of complications from his knee surgery, i.e. scar tissue build up and may need additional surgeries to get it all squared away. So 2009 is probably out of the picture for Brady to come back. I know the Patriots have faith in Brady that he WILL come back and be just as awesome, but I understand the need to have security in the quarterback position. I am glad to see the organization be willing t pay both quarterbacks big money especially when it does take up a large portion of the salary cap.

Obviously this Patriot fan wants Brady back behind center, healthy and ready to lead us to another Super Bowl. I believe it will happen. But until he is ready, I’ll support Cassel wholeheartedly!

I don’t think that Patriots would cut Brady, but they could trade him away. Still, I’d be leery of putting too much faith in Cassel at this early stage - he seems like 2008’s Derek Anderson. The Pats are locking up a ton of money in their QB position - we’ll see what that means for free agency, especially as their defense ages. It’ll also be pretty interesting if Scott Pioli leaves - he may be just as responsible for the Patriots success as Belicheck and Brady…
